#015: A Deep(er) Dive Into a String of Snippets
In which I go into a little more detail about a series of snippets I posted on Bluesky for a get-to-know-my-writing challenge.
Well, for a post that I’ve had in the works since late 2024 (when I originally did the thread of snippets on Bluesky), now that I’ve sat down to finish this, it’s actually been a lot of fun and I don’t know why I haven’t done this sooner. Oh well. At least it’s completed now and ready for your consumption.
Here’s the start of the aforementioned thread. Be warned, none of these snippets have had more than maybe a round of a basic spelling and grammar check. Content notice for general themes of toxicity and violence.
#01: Hades deserves to rot.
Ah, Minthe. If the Lost Gods series is my quarter-life/lifelong obsession, Minthe is my smoldering passion that I want to inflict onto the audio storytelling world. This specific snippet, these two sentences, were the the first lines I wrote for this dark fiction podcast. Whenever I was feeling blocked while drafting the script from late 2021 through November of 2024, I’d come back to this bit to figure out where I was going in terms of main character’s motivation. I suspect that I’ll keep coming back to this as I edit the script before putting out a call for voice actors in the hopefully near future.
#02: Priests behaving badly.
What started out as a spite project against (one of) a certain race-faking writer’s pseudonym and was inspired by The Exorcist TV series has morphed into a cannibalistic why-choose blasphemous mini-event that I’m slowly chipping away at. It’s also my first short story with the main relationship being MMM (with one of the characters in that being a demon stuck in the body of a cis/het woman).
#03: Inbreeding gone very wrong.
I don’t know if you could tell based on my online track record and previously published works, but I’m a huge fan of rural horror and creepy biblically accurate angels. Throw in doppelgängers, maybe accidental inbreeding, and a sentient bit of the woods written to Ethel Cain’s discography, and bam! You have what ever this short story is.
#04: She has more lives than the Cheshire Cat.
I have a complex relationship with Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland. On one hand, I devour media based on it, especially anything with a dark fae-like twist (Splintered series by A.G. Howard, I’m looking at you). On the other hand, it’s just so illogical that it throws my brain off in the strangest of ways. But I’m determined to reconnect with what I love about it and, sprinkling in some pregnancy horror (No. Me? Gasp!) and a twisted power-imbalanced triad, I’m dipping my toes into this audio drama script. We’ll see how quickly I finish this, though, as I have other writing priorities.
#05: Just because you raised me doesn’t mean I’m yours to claim.
Since the original publication of Selfish Creatures Desire Vengeance back in 2022, I’ve been trying to recapture the drive I had to create such raw poetry. I’m currently experiences a pretty heavy poetry writer’s block, but every now and then I’ll be able to whip up a poem or two. This is from one from a longer (long for me) poem inspired by my relationship with one of my parents. It always feels so, so weird to write anything remotely non-fiction, so I’m assuming that’s one of the reasons it takes a lot for me to write anything within that vein.
#06: The gods of old are calling.
Meet a small introduction to another one of my hyperfixations: Greek mythology and the imagery it can evoke. This bit is from a mythology and folklore-themed mini-poetry collection that’s been in the works since Selfish Creatures Desire Vengeance was released. Will the rest of this collection ever see the light of day? Whooo knows. Certainly not me. My poetry, its creation, and its release into the wide, wide world is very much not known to me until it calls to me.
#07: Singing “Under the Sea" for no reason whatsoever.
I’ve been very protective about this project and intend to keep it more of a mystery online than a lot of my other projects. But I can tell you that it’s very much informed by the current world climate and attitudes on war, queer taboo desires, and what peace means if its gained through violence. It’s also set in the God & the Conquered fictional universe so make of that what you will.
#08: A meeting of flesh-eaters and blood-drinkers.
This wouldn’t be a proper snippet post/thread if I didn’t include something from Lost Gods. I’m not going to say much because this story keeps twisting, turning, and changing. I might be the one in the driver’s seat but I’m only along for the ride and am being guided by ghosts dancing across the broken asphalt and dirt road.
#09: Bloody Judas kisses and vampirism galore!
Dear reader, this is in fact a lie. Oh, don’t get me wrong, he thinks he’s a relatively good man. But he’s the villain in this story of villains and anti-villains. This story, A Savior, Dark, has gone through so many rewrites since it’s conception in 2020, but my god, I’m still obsessed with this monstrous reimagining of the crucifixion and resurrection of a trans vampiric Jesus of Nazareth set in a winter-bound alternate history version of 18-19th Century Bohemia and told through the eyes of a cannibalistic Mary Magdalene.
#10: Even more backwoods cults and nasty polycules.
What started as a Lost Gods AU about what might happen if the main cast was trapped in one bubble during the start of Covid-19 has morphed into a contemporary story of destroying fundamentalist religious cults in the backwoods of Appalachia, second-chance romance, and three masked weirdos. So, in some sense it’s very similar to the origin of this project in the same way that all of my projects are loosely interconnected via tropes and themes. This project terrifies me due to the fact that I am determined for there to be no fantastical elements. No magic, no gods, no vampires (le gasp!). Just good old-fashioned stalkers, toxic queer polycules, and a mysterious serial killer overshadowing it all.
Thank you all for being so patient for me to update this newsletter. I hadn’t forgotten, just got really busy with life-y things. Don’t hold me to it, but as I have almost a dozen of other posts in progress, I should be able to update this little corner of the internet more often. Because once every two/three months isn’t cutting it for me personally.
